Great! Awesome staff. Compassionate & knowledgeable physician.
Allergies are a common problem in the United States, affecting as many as 50 million adults and children each year, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). If you are one of those sufferers, you know all too well how a chronic runny nose and itchy eyes affect your daily life. Until recently, allergy treatments have consisted of either managing symptoms through medication like allergy drops or a series of allergy shots that can take three to five years to complete.
Now there is a more convenient solution. Acadian Allergy Center is pleased to now offer our patients an alternative form of treatment for their respiratory allergies. Known as oral mucosal immunotherapy or OMIT, this new way of managing your allergies is meant to fit easily into your daily routine. The treatment comes in the form of a toothpaste called Allerdent®, which you can use daily in the comfort of your own home. You can literally brush away your allergies! Contact our office today to find out if OMIT is the right fit for you.
What is Immunotherapy?
Immunotherapy is the process behind the success of allergy desensitization therapies like Allerdent® toothpaste. Immunotherapy has been used for many years for a wide range of medical purposes, including cancer treatment. When immunotherapy is used to address allergies, it works by exposing the patient to the allergen in limited amounts over an extended period, with the goal of training your immune system to become less reactive to the substance.
The most common type of immunotherapy today is a series of allergy shots, which administer small doses of the allergen directly into the body via injection. This treatment consists of weekly shots for three to five years. While the results of the therapy are positive, many patients may find themselves unable to follow through with the entire protocol to reap the full benefits.
What is OMIT?
Oral mucosal immunotherapy or OMIT is the latest discovery in allergy treatment. The creator of this technique, allergist William Reisacher at Weill Cornell Medicine, focused on the oral administration during his research because of the high concentration of immune-regulating cells in the mucous membranes of the mouth. Oral administration allows for efficient delivery of the allergen to the immune system, possibly increasing the speed and efficacy of the treatment. Allergy desensitization toothpaste is the next generation of OMIT.
While sublingual therapy also uses oral delivery, there were some drawbacks to this mode of treatment that Reisacher wanted to address with the introduction of his therapy. While patients have to remember to take the drops used in sublingual therapy daily, teeth brushing is a natural part of everyone’s daily routine. Just switching out your regular toothpaste with toothpaste for allergies raised the convenience bar on allergy treatment even higher.
Allerdent® consists of a thickened paste that cleans the teeth just like any other toothpaste. Liquid desensitizing serums are added based on your specific allergies. The serums are the same ones used for different types of immunotherapy and include allergens for pollen and grasses. The individual tubes are mixed in our office and provided to patients in a 90-day prescription. Once you have your first treatment in our office, you can take the tube for daily use wherever you are.
Convenient Home Treatment
Allerdent® is a fully functional toothpaste that will clean your teeth. It contains the same ingredients that are used in standard, non-fluoridated toothpaste. Allerdent® behaves, tastes and smells like any other toothpaste in your medicine cabinet and comes in both mint and berry flavors. Since the recommended dosage of Allerdent® is once a day use, you can use your usual brand of toothpaste at your other brushings. Allerdent® needs to remain in the mouth for a full two minutes, which is the same amount of time you are advised to brush your teeth. It is possible you may find that by adhering to this time frame more carefully, your gums are even healthier after using Allerdent®!
Allerdent® is a toothpaste for allergy sufferers that can be kept at room temperature, so you can take it with you during travels or even to your office every day. The treatment is the ultimate time and money saver with no need for weekly visits to our office. You can brush away your respiratory allergies in the comfort of your own home.
